As of last Wednesday night, July 5th, the Friends of the Sherborn Library officially kicked off their Summer Concert Series with Women in World Jazz! It was the perfect night for this summer series to begin as the sun finally hung high in the sky after a few dreary days.

The library lawn was filled with blankets, chairs, and folks of all ages who came to enjoy the soothing sounds of jazz music under the summer sun.

“Hello Sherborn! We’re happy to be here on a rare night without rain,” Tal Shalom-Kobi, upright bassist and accordion player, shared with the crowd, earning a few laughs. She went on to explain that all of her bandmates were from all over the world, “we would like to introduce you to music from all over the world…. We will sing in different languages and we invite you to dance!”

The forte of the band consisted of playing jazz, as their band name implies, and blues. Though, their diverse cultural background is what led to their desire to share music from all over the world as their international roster impacts their musical repertoire.

The group began their performance with two American tracks, beginning with God Bless the Child by Billie Holiday, then moving on to play an instrumental version of Shiny Stockings by Ella Fitzgerald. The dynamic group moved onto sharing their international sounds, including songs from the Caribbean, Israel, and Japan, just to name a few. Between the unique and colorful sounds that they played to represent each respective country and the gems of knowledge that they shared about these beautiful cultures, it was truly an immersive, cultural experience. These women used the power of music to bring these attendees on a musical journey all over the world.

Women in World Jazz are a dynamic, multicultural group of women with extensive experience in musical performance, as well as musical education, which was plain to see through their performance at the Sherborn Library.
