The smell of sweetness in the air lured young bakers to the Sherborn community room on Wednesday, August 2nd. Scents of fresh lemon, lime, and a sugary crust awaited their arrival, it was a perfect day to make pies. Kate Shepherd the owner and founder of Food Explorers traveled all the way from Connecticut for this special occasion.
Helping the young adults step by step throughout the pie-making process, Shepherd guided the young aspiring bakers to make their own lemon meringue and lime pies. Although these pies weren’t your typical pies, they were unique non-bake pies, perfect to enjoy a celebration of hard work and yummy treats afterward.
The group was ecstatic to learn how to make these pies, first beginning by crushing up graham crackers into small granules like sand. Adding a bit of melted butter and sugar, the apprentices were ready to press on the foundation of their crust to their pie plates.
Next, the bakers learned about electric hand whisks making homemade whipped cream, each having a go on twirling the heavy cream as it transformed into a delicious, whipped consistency. As the bakers continued to follow Shepherd’s instructions, they split into two teams, the lemon and lime teams. Here, they zested and squeezed the fruitful flavors into their mixing bowls filled with cream cheese, lemon curd yogurt, and more. It was fun for all the young adults as they took turns at each station, creating their tasteful desserts.
Once all the ingredients were mixed in, the pie filling was perfected, and it was time for the young bakers to create their pies. The pies were masterpieces filled to the brim with mouth-watering pudding-like filling, topped with fluffy whipped cream, and colorful sprinkles.
At last, the young talent was able to dive into their flavorful pies and instantly smiles grew across their faces as they enjoy every bite. It was the perfect afternoon for some baking.
