Dr. Terri Halperin planned to run the Boston Marathon this year to commemorate her 40th birthday with her husband, Dr. Michael Davidson.
Unfortunately, Davidson, the Director of Endovascular Cardiac Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, was killed last January when the son of one of his former patients shot and killed him at the Brigham.
But Halperin has not been deterred in her quest to run the Boston Marathon, and she has been training diligently with some of her husband’s colleagues as part of Team Life.Giving.Breakthroughs. She and her team are raising money for a fellowship that has been established in Davidson’s name at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the Michael J. Davidson, MD Endovascular Fellowship.
Once planning to run the marathon to commemorate her 40th birthday, Halperin will now run to commemorate her husband’s life and legacy. The fellowship program will ensure future generations will receive the life-saving care that Davidson pioneered in his short career.
Davidson trained as both a cardiovascular surgeon and an interventional cardiologist. Along with some of his colleagues, he pushed the adoption of new, less invasive ways to repair damaged aortic valves, replacing heart valves by inserting them through catheters instead of incisions. He was also a member of the team that performed the hospital’s first tricuspid “valve-in-valve” procedure.
Davidson played an important role in establishing the BWH’s Cardiac Hybrid Operating Room, which has since been named in his memory.
