A fatal single-vehicle crash on Route 16 in Wellesley claimed the life of a driver Thursday morning, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities.
According to the Wellesley Police Department, the incident occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. along Washington Street, which is part of Route 16, near the intersection with Glen Road. An officer on patrol was flagged down by a bystander who reported a black SUV stopped in the roadway after apparently veering off course.
Emergency responders arrived to find the driver unconscious and unresponsive inside the vehicle. The individual, whose identity has not yet been released pending family notification, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Preliminary findings suggest the crash involved only one vehicle. Authorities indicated the SUV had been traveling eastbound before leaving the roadway and coming to a stop after a short distance.
A section of Route 16 was closed for several hours as investigators reconstructed the scene. The cause of the crash remains unclear, and officials have not said whether speed, medical issues, or other factors contributed.
The investigation is ongoing.
