Two-time freestyle Frisbee world champion Todd Brodeur is now on tour. He made an appearance at Walpole Library on Monday morning from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m., and put on quite a show for dozens of kids.
“Ultimate Frisbee is huge these days and I coach a team in Medway. We came in ninth place at States last year,” said Todd. “But I specialize in freestyle, and the difference is you do a routine, almost like gymnastics or dance, which is judged on difficulty, execution and presentation.”
On this particular Monday morning, Todd was educating instead of competing, showing the kids a wide variety of Frisbees and tricks, then helping them perform their own.
“He did a demonstration of different tricks and talked about the time and effort to get involved in the sport,” said Kara Dean, the Youth Services Librarian. “Todd also showed us a wide variety of Frisbees from his smallest (which he got from a Barbie set) to his largest (which had a hole in it and he could catch with his body) to the oldest Frisbee (which was actually a pie tin).”
Once the demonstration and education was over, Todd led the kids in throwing their own Frisbees and attempting minor tricks. Grown-ups and kids alike had their heads on a swivel by the end, as dozens of young Frisbee enthusiasts were tossing around the discs with the former world champ.
