It didn’t take long for the Medfield High School boys varsity lacrosse team to showcase their dominance in their season and conference-opening contest against Holliston last Tuesday night, as the Warriors jumped out to a commanding 8-0 lead at the half and went on to win by a final count of 16-1.
A pair of sophomore attackmen led the way for the Warriors (1-0, 1-0) in this one, as Owen Murphy (five goals and three assists) and Michael Hauptman (three goals) were the nucleus of Medfield’s offensive success against the Panthers. Senior captain and midfielder Jack Cahill netted two goals as well for the Warriors, while senior captain Jack Fitzgerald and senior captain Mark Nevins each scored a goal and accumulated two assists on the evening. Senior captain and midfielder Andrew Garfield also notched his first tally of the 2017 season.
Senior LSM (long-stick midfielder) and captain Matt Dold, senior attackman Jon Stewart, and freshman attackman Jack McCordie also each netted their first goals of the 2017 season against Holliston on Tuesday, while senior attackman Ted Hunt and senior midfielder Andrew Cook each notched their first assists of the season.
Perhaps the biggest difference-maker in the game, however, was the incredible production on faceoffs by freshman midfielder Mike Tyer, who went 18 for 21 throughout the contest and allowed Medfield to control the tempo of the game on offense with increased possessions.
Defensively, the Warriors were about as dominant as could be, with Dold grabbing three ground balls on the night, all while Cook, Nevins, Murphy, and junior midfielder Tom Schofield each had two.
In net, the Warriors saw five total saves by junior goaltender Liam Gately (three) and senior Kevin Walsh (two).
Medfield’s second game of the season against Hopkinton on Thursday was postponed due to rain, and a makeup date is still TBD.
