A 9-7-2 regular season earned Medfield High girls soccer the No. 14 seed in Division II last fall. The Lady-Warriors took out No. 19 Milton (2-0) in the preliminary round before a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to No. 3 Foxboro in the first round.
The Warriors return a significant core of talent, starting with their three senior co-captains: right forward Sophia Gustafson, defender Kaitlyn Whelan and outside forward Brenna Skerry.
“Our goal is obviously always to win the TVL and to get as far as possible into the state tournament,” said Gustafson when asked on her team’s general goals for the season ahead. “But I think also on a smaller scale, we want to create a cohesive team environment and use all of our resources like speed and foot skills from each individual player to complement one another.”
Like last season, Medfield will hope to utilize a team approach to their offensive schemes and not rely on one or two specific players.
”This season, we are hoping to build off of the idea of having as many players serve as scoring options as possible just like we did last year,” said Gustafson. “Almost all of our starting line up will be returning starters, so the good thing is that we can go into the season knowing how each other play, along with knowing what we want to work on right off the bat. We’ve had an amazing team dynamic throughout the whole offseason program and we are so excited to start up the season. We had some awesome preseason athletic performances, so we know that all three teams in the program this year will have a lot of talent.”
