Fairies Come Back to Medfield

The grounds of Stephen Hinkley Memorial Park were recently transformed as hundreds came out to enjoy a spring celebration for humans and fairies alike: the fifth annual Fairy Walk. This magical festival featured craft and food vendors, photo opportunities, an array of entertainment, and, of course, a large number of incredibly creative fairy houses.

Educational consultant Kathleen Derian was behind the idea to bring this whimsical event to Medfield in 2021. She said she was inspired by fairy walks she attended both in Europe and here in Massachusetts, and originally brought the concept to the Medfield Arts Council as a fundraising opportunity. Five years later, the celebration appears more popular than ever.
“It’s a lot of work,” Derian said. “But every time I see a little boy or girl in a wizard hat or fairy wings at the event, it’s totally worth it.”
This year, more than two dozen whimsical residences lined the wooded pathway between the pond and playground at the park. Visitors strolled through - some with their own little fairies in tow - admiring the creativity and craftsmanship that went into each miniature work of art.

Elsewhere in town, the Bellforge Arts Center also hosted a Fairy Walk the same day, offering another opportunity for families to enjoy the seasonal tradition. Their event featured food, vendors, and a Holi Celebration complete with a color throw.
The Hindu festival of Holi is celebrated by millions around the world and is recognized as a national holiday in India. Also known as the Festival of Colors, Holi celebrates spring, love, and the triumph of good over evil. Depending on local traditions, the observance can last two days: the first marked by a ritual bonfire symbolizing that victory, and the second devoted to color play, when participants wear white and toss colored water or powder at one another, along with enjoying music, friendship, and food.

When asked about this year’s two Fairy Walk events, Bellforge Arts Center Executive Director Jean Mineo shared a positive perspective.
“She (Kathleen Derian) has typically held it in April, which is why we chose a May date, and this year the dates coincide,” Mineo said. “Who couldn’t use a little more fairy magic in their lives right now?”
It certainly appears the town of Medfield agrees, as both events were reportedly beautifully executed and well attended, bringing plenty of springtime magic to the community.
