The Medfield Boys and Girls Lacrosse teams won their state championships last week. The first-seeded girls triumphed in a 14-10 victory over second-seeded Newburyport on Thursday. On Saturday, the first-seeded boys dominated No. 2 Scituate with a final score of 13-4.
The girls rolled through the MIAA playoffs. With 15+ goal wins over Danvers, Groton-Dunstable, Bedford, and Foxboro, there were high expectations for the championship matchup versus Newburyport last Thursday. Boston College commit Kelly Blake set the tone early for Medfield, scoring just 35 seconds into the game. This was the first of her three goals, recording yet another hat trick. Sophomore Izzy Kittredge struck second in a tight start.
The game was neck and neck as Medfield held an 11-8 lead with a minute left in the third quarter. With five seconds left in the quarter, Medfield’s Michaela McDonald sniped a crucial goal for the Warriors, halting the Clippers’ momentum. Medfield maintained a four-goal lead through the final quarter, bringing home the Warriors’ second championship in three seasons. Medfield’s depth shined in the championship outing. Franklin & Marshall commit Alex Proefrock racked up four goals, St. Anselm commit Kendall Herrick recorded a hat trick, and junior Maeve Kelly had two clutch goals in the second half.
The boys were unstoppable on their path to the state championship. Dominant wins over Tewksbury (21-3), Holliston (16-2), Foxboro (21-9), and Nauset (19-5) set the tone for the championship matchup. Scituate, who went 19-5 in the regular season, posed a competitive threat to the 19-3 Warriors. However, Medfield quickly set any doubt aside.
The Warriors took a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and ended the half leading 8-3. Lockdown goaltending from Chase Coughlin only extended the Warriors’ lead, securing the lead and the 13-4 victory. Hat tricks from junior Ben Lusby and senior Tim Collins drove Medfield’s offense, reinforced by goals from Joe Bartolotta (2), Ian Reddy, Jack Sampson, Jackson Dodge, Matt George, and Gavin Marmai. Impenetrable defensive efforts from Michael Long, Will DiGregorio, and Will Griffin made this game a blowout, proving the all-around strength of Medfield Lacrosse.
The unmatched leadership and commitment from coach John Isaf rewarded Medfield with their ninth state championship. Congratulations to both teams!
