Troop 89 mints new Eagle Scouts

Medfield's Boy Scout Troop 89 members William Henry Whitaker, Joshua L. Lozano, and Hayden Christian Sutherland Gray were honored at their Eagle Court of Honor on November 26 at the United Church of Christ in Medfield. Family, friends, members of Troop 89, as well as state and local officials, attended this event, recognizing these young men for their achievements.

Attaining the rank of Eagle is rare; only four to eight percent of all Boy Scouts do so. To earn the Eagle Scout rank, the highest advancement rank in Scouting, a Boy Scout must fulfill requirements in the areas of leadership, service, and outdoor skills. The fact that a boy is an Eagle Scout has always carried a special significance in Scouting and as he enters higher education, business or industry, and community service.

The requirements of the rank of Eagle Scout are as follows: a Scout must earn 21 merit badges, including 13 required Eagle Badges; a Scout must serve actively in a troop leadership position for at least six months; a Scout must plan, develop, and carry out a service project worthy of an Eagle Scout; and a Scout must appear before a Board of Review of prominent persons to demonstrate that he has done his best to live up to the Scout Oath and Law and has qualified as an Eagle Scout.

William Henry Whitaker joined Troop 89 in 2015 at age 11 when he crossed over from Webelos, Pack 200, where he received the Arrow of Light Award. On his trail to Eagle, Billy earned 35 merit badges. He successfully completed Junior Leadership training and demonstrated his leadership ability within Troop 89 in the capacities of Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, and Historian. Billy is an Ordeal member of the Order of the Arrow and has participated in 45 camping trips, including the high adventure trip to Florida's National High Adventure SeaBase at Islamorada.

Billy's Eagle project was to research, plan, and install a lighted flagpole at the Fin, Fur and Feather Club in Millis. Work included product research, site prep, digging a hole 18 inches by 24 inches deep, installing a PVC tube surrounded by concrete, erecting the flagpole, and finishing with gravel and a stone circle. Flag ceremonies are now held routinely.

Billy is a freshman at Rochester Institute of Technology studying mechanical engineering with a concentration in aerospace engineering and working with the RIT Tech Crew. A member of the National Honor Society, Billy was the recipient of the National Honor Society Scholarship, John Phillip Sousa Band Award, Medfield SEPAC Andrea Thrasher Scholarship and the Medfield High School Physics Award. He was a member of Medfield High School's graduating class of 2022, where he participated in concert band, drum ensemble, chess club, tabletop games club and theater set crew.

Joshua Lozano joined Troop 89 in 2015 at age 11, when he crossed over from Webelos, Pack 113 – where he received the Arrow of Light Award. Josh has earned a total of 26 merit badges. He successfully completed Junior Leadership training and demonstrated his leadership ability within Troop 89 in the capacities of Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, and Troop Quartermaster and has participated in 31 camping trips.

Josh's Eagle Scout Project was designed to create birdhouses specifically crafted to attract the local birds in the area at the Medfield's Council on Aging. The bird houses that were at this location were aging and it seemed prudent to build some new ones so our senior citizens could enjoy. He took great pride and enjoyment in accomplishing this project with his fellow Scouts.

Josh is a freshman at Wentworth Institute of Technology studying design engineering with a focus on automotives. He was a member of Medfield High School's graduating class of 2022 where he was involved in the debate team, concert band, karate and skiing.

Hayden Christian Sutherland joined Troop 89 in 2015 at age 11, when he crossed over from Webelos, Pack 200, where he received the Arrow of Light Award. On his trail to Eagle, Hayden earned a total of 41 merit badges. He successfully completed Junior Leadership training and demonstrated his leadership ability within Troop 89 in the capacities of Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader and Troop Librarian. Hayden has participated in 50 camping trips, including the high adventure trip to Florida's National High Adventure SeaBase at Islamorada.

Hayden's Eagle Project was to build a patio on the grounds of Medway Community Church that could serve as a meeting space for future community group meetings and a safe space for the on-site youth pastor's toddler. Work included digging out a space, filling it with various base layers, and laying pavers.

Hayden is a freshman at Gordon College studying business administration and engineering. He was a member of Medfield High School's graduating class of 2022, where he was a member of the baseball team, the jazz band and the concert band. A member of the National Honor Society, Hayden was the recipient of the T. Leonard Lewis Scholarship and the John Phillip Sousa Band Award.

Hayden is a past recipient of the Sean Corrigan Character Award.
