On Wednesday, February 21, elementary aged Pokémon fans were invited to Medfield Public Library (MPL) for some Pokémon themed February vacation fun. Registration for this event was full, as many children flocked to the MPL to share their enthusiasm for the Japanese franchise.
To make this edition of Pokémon Pals special, Miss Gretchen, the children’s librarian, invited the middle schoolers from the weekly Pokémon Club to this program.
While the younger children awaited for the older kids to arrive, Miss Gretchen provided a variety of books about Pokémon for the children to read amongst themselves or to read to one another.
Once the older kids arrived, the children introduced themselves to one another, sharing their name, age, and a fun fact about themselves. After everyone was acquainted with one another, the middle schoolers taught their younger peers how to draw a variety of Pokémon, including Oddish and Jigglypuff.
The older kids taught the kids how to battle using the cards, which offered a wonderful learning opportunity for younger card collectors who were unsure of how to actually play with the cards in their collection. This served as a way for children to show off their collections to one another, furthering their newly formed bonds with one another.
While children were not able to trade cards with each other during the program, the kids excitedly shared their favorite Pokémon cards with one another, sharing what their favorite Pokémon, Pokémon types, and moves were. The children were very excited to share their passion for this popular franchise with one another and their knowledge about the Pokémon themselves.
At the end of the program, the middle school students gave each one of their younger peers a new Pokémon to take home.
Each child walked out of the children’s room at the MPL with new Pokémon drawings, a new trading card, and a smile on their faces. This program served as a wonderful way for younger children to connect with their older peers, share their enthusiasm for this popular program/trading card game.
