Registration for the town-owned garden on Plain Street opens for the year on March 2. Plots are available on a first-request basis.
Plots come in two sizes: 600 square feet – more than enough space to supply a family of four or more – and half-sized plots of 300 square feet for those new to gardening or needing less space. All gardeners are required to maintain their gardens organically — without the use of pesticides or herbicides which would contaminate neighboring plots.
To apply, contact Neal Sanders (508-359-9453) or email him at n_h_sanders@yahoo.com. Note that applications are no longer accepted at Town Hall.
For either a novice or an experienced gardener, the Community Garden offers a great opportunity to grow vegetables and save substantially on food costs. The Garden is located on Conservation Commission land at the former Holmquist Farm. The site provides all-day sun, something scarce for many Medfield residents. Because the town plows the field on which the Community Garden is located, one of the more labor-intensive parts of creating a vegetable garden is already done.
For those who've never had a vegetable garden or feel they'd like a refresher course, Master Gardener and professional horticulturalist Betty Sanders will offer a program on planning, planting and growing a garden. The presentation will begin at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 18 at the Medfield Library.
With multiple water spigots and large piles of organic fertilizer on site, gardeners need provide only their own seeds or seedlings – and agree to keep their plots weed-free. Fencing, while not mandatory, is recommended. Because the Community Garden has now been on Plain Street for more than a decade, the soil is exceptionally rich in organic nutrients.
A limited number of plots are available for the 2017 gardening season. Residents may apply by phone or email. All plots are available on a first-come basis. Full-sized plots are $25 per year; half-sized plots are $18. Those who have not previously had a plot at the community garden also pay a one-time fee of $20.
