The Sherborn Library hosted some friendly competition throughout the month of October with their 4th Annual Jack-O-Lantern Competition! Starting on October 13th, families had up to ten days to craft and carve their pumpkins to be submitted into the contest.

Families had the option to either buy a pumpkin of their own or reserve one through the library. Pick up for the reserved pumpkins started on the 13th and rules stipulated that there could only be one pumpkin registered per family.

Every family had until the 20th to pick up their pumpkin, which meant that depending on when they picked it up, they had anywhere from three to ten days to decorate it for the competition. If you did not want to participate in the contest, all were welcome to come and view those who had entered and vote for your favorite.

There were twenty two pumpkins in total that competed in the contest, all with their own unique flare. Pumpkin #5 was carved and decorated like Spiderman, including bats and a tiny blue pumpkin attached to the top of its stem.

Pumpkin #13 looked to be a Patriot’s fan, wearing a Patriot football hat and some pipe cleaners for arms, legs, shoes, and eyes. Pumpkin #16 was carved out to be an angry skeleton octopus. The carving on this one must have been incredibly difficult but came out amazing!

Pumpkin #17 was by far the most colorful, carved and painted to be a mermaid. The entire pumpkin had scales carved out and was painted blue with purple glitter on top. Attached to one side of the pumpkin was a cutout of the top of a mermaid, while the other side of the pumpkin was a cutout of the continuation of the mermaid’s tail.

This year’s winners included Pumpkin #17 in first place, Pumpkin #15 in second place, and Pumpkin #5 in third place.

All of the twenty two pumpkins submitted were absolutely incredible and extremely creative. Those casting their vote certainly had a tough decision to make. With all the families who entered, it can be said with ease that they all hope this Jack-O-Lantern Competition continues for years to come!
