The Sherborn Library prepared to celebrate St. Patrick's Day a week early with its Celtic Chocolate Program. Led by Kim Larkin of KlassicKreations, a licensed chocolatier enthusiastic about sharing programs with local communities, the event aimed to showcase various Irish delights, including tea, cheese, chocolate, and bread.
The Celtic Chocolate Program served as an homage to Ireland and its rich culinary heritage. Attendees were treated to samples while Larkin discussed the cultural significance of these foods in Ireland.
The first sample distributed was Barry’s Irish tea, a popular brand known for its bitter and highly caffeinated nature in Ireland, although the version served was decaffeinated to accommodate all ages. The tea, slightly sweetened, was enjoyed by all present.
Following the tea, Irish bread with raisins was served. Bread holds a unique history in Ireland, as access to baking soda was limited until 1830. Raisins were added to impart a hint of sweetness to the dish. Bread and tea were served together to replicate a classic Irish tea setting.
Next on the menu were vintage Irish cheddar cheese and a coin of chocolate, served together to allow participants to experience the harmonious blend of salty and sweet flavors derived from grass-fed milk. The flavors melded beautifully, creating a delightful sensation for the audience.
In addition to savoring these treats, Larkin provided insights into the history of Ireland and Celtic traditions. She discussed iconic elements such as the Book of Kells, Guinness beer, the significance of the Claddagh, and Irish folklore, including beliefs in fae and other mystical creatures. Larkin also regaled the audience with folktales before concluding her presentation with a lively trivia game, eliciting laughter from all participants.
The goal of the program was clear: to stimulate the mind, senses and palate of all attendees, while also providing them insights on the rich history of her Irish culture. This interactive program acted as a means to bring the community together to enjoy cheese, chocolate, and the joy of learning.
