A not-so-scary good time at SPL

Little ones were in for a fun, not-so-spooky treat this past Tuesday, October 31st, as the Sherborn Public Library (SPL) hosted a Halloween Storytime for all to come and enjoy. Mini ghosts, ghouls, goblins and more filled the Nora’s Treehouse room to get into the Halloween spirit before trick or treating later on at night.

While not required, some kiddos, and even their guardians, dressed in their costumes, eager to participate in some Halloween festivities. Everyone looked absolutely incredible, it was certainly a cuteness overload!

Running this storytime event was Children’s Librarian, Jen Carlson, who dressed up as a butterfly. She began the program with a couple of songs the children could sing and dance along to, like the hello song, the shake the sillies out song, a freeze dance song, and the teddy bear turn around song.

Once a good amount of their energy was out, it was time to read some Halloween stories together. Carlson’s first book that she read was “5 Little Pumpkins” which is also a song. Kiddos could either read along with her or sing if they wanted to.

This quick read led into Carlson’s next two stories, “Corduroy's Best Halloween Ever!” by B. G. Hennessy and “Clifford’s Halloween” by Norman Bridwell. While reading each story, Carlson asked the little ones different questions to keep them engaged. Even when questions weren’t asked, they had no hesitation to talk about the book and even how it related to themselves. When talking about what they thought Corduroy would be for Halloween within the book, many of them shared what they were going to be dressing up as.

After the three books were read, they sang along to one more song, “The Wheels on the Bus,” before Carlson used the bubble machine. This may have been the highlight of the event for most of the kiddos, running around to pop as many bubbles as they could. While doing this, Carlson played some kid-friendly Halloween music and made sure to wish everyone a very safe and happy Halloween!

This event was a great way to get kids even more excited for Halloween night and was another great excuse for them to wear their costumes a little earlier this year. From everyone here at Hometown Weekly, we hope everyone had an exciting and safe Halloween night!
