Walpole High School athletics seems to be building a pipeline to UMass-Lowell. In the last two years, Walpole has sent two of its athletes to play lacrosse at Lowell: Conor Foley ('19) for the men and Abby McLaughlin ('19) for the women's team.

On Thursday evening, the Walpole School Board voted unanimously (9-0) to change the high school's "Rebel" mascot. The decision comes two weeks after a petition was started to change the school's mascot amid racial tensions and worldwide Black Lives Matter protests. A counter petition was also started to keep the nickname.

For many in the town of Walpole, the high school's Rebel mascot holds a lot of sentimental value. At the same time, there are many, both within and outside of the town, who connect the Rebel mascot to racism and the Confederacy.
Walpole has become a big-time recruiting ground for Plymouth State men’s lacrosse in recent years. In 2019, the Panthers rostered three Walpole High alums: LSM Charlie Harrington (2016), close D Zach Conrad (2017) and midfielder Harvest Perez (2013).
It was obvious during his time at Walpole High School that Conor Foley, a 200-point scorer in both lacrosse and ice hockey, was a supreme athlete. After winning Bay State Conference Co-MVP honors as a junior, Foley committed to play at UMass Lowell.
