The Wellesley High baseball team was busy over April Vacation, playing in two games over the vacation period.

After taking several days off to give players the chance to enjoy a few days of vacation, the Raiders were back on the field on April 21 to face off against Medfield.

The Raiders picked up a 9-2 win against Medfield, with Brad Marchetti picking up two runs and two hits for the team.

The first runs of the game came in the third inning, as Medfield picked up one run and Wellesley picked up two. After two scoreless innings, Wellesley erupted with seven runs in the sixth inning, while Medfield only picked up one run.

After the Medfield win, the team traveled to Cape Cod to face Barnstable.

Barnstable picked up an early 1-0 lead with a single run in the first inning. But Wellesley surprised Barnstable with an early offensive push in the third inning, picking up six runs in the third.

Barnstable fought back and picked up seven runs in the fourth inning, taking a 8-6 lead against the Raiders. With both teams picking up a single run in the fifth, Barnstable extended its lead by a gap of three runs in the sixth, now leading 10-7.

But the Raiders fought back, scoring five runs in the seventh, while Barnstable were only able to come up with one run. The game ended with a final 12-11.

Leading the pack in runs was Jason Maiona with three runs, along with Brad Marchetti and Isaac Weycker with two runs each.

Head coach Rob Kane was especially proud of the Barnstable win because it was the first varsity game for five freshmen on the team.

“The game included five freshmen who were put in different positions [than they were used to,]” Kane said. “They’ve never played [varsity] before.”

Looking forward, Kane hopes to improve the team’s ability to capitalize on runs. He noted that during the games, the team gave up over 11 runs, which could put the team in a challenging position in future games by making a comeback more difficult.

“If you give up 11 runs, it’s hard to recover,” Kane said.
