Felted Pumpkin class at MPL

For all the crafters who want to add to the spooky spirit this October, Medfield public library hosted Pop Up Art’s own Lisa Walker with a take on needle felting. This time around, we made pumpkins!

Instead of making a three dimensional shape, walker set everyone up with a hoop that has fabric tightened in it. That way no one had to worry about shaping the gourd and could work on a flat surface. With the barbed needles and wool in hand, the crafters set off to work.

What’s great about needle felting is that every piece comes out unique, and with flat pieces it can be an easier learning curve. There was even a kid in this class accompanying a family member and he seemed to have just as much fun.

After laying down the base orange and working the stem out, everyone’s pumpkins took on their own shape with the face. Some went happy, others spooky, and one even had little fangs like a vampire. Walker had more wool to hand out so people could add to the background. Some people even added a ghost! With such a small surface it took no time at all and everyone was eager to work on it. After all, who doesn’t love small décor for Halloween, especially if you make it yourself?
