It was about as complete of a performance as a lacrosse team could have on Wednesday afternoon for Wellesley High School against Braintree.
The Raiders (4-0) saw pure and utter domination at the faceoff X by sophomore midfielder Teddy Komjathy, who won 21 faceoffs on the afternoon. Meanwhile, senior captain Michael Bomes scored seven goals (five in the first half), junior Hugh Callahan recorded a hat trick, and the extra possessions awarded to the Raiders all afternoon by Komjathy’s production on draws allowed Wellesley to cruise to a 17-4 win and remain unbeaten on the season.
Senior goaltender Teddy Darcey recorded seven saves for Wellesley despite facing just 11 shots.
Callahan got the scoring started for the Raiders less than a minute in with a goal off transition after an opening faceoff win by Komjathy to make it 1-0. Midfielder Chris Aitken launched home a goal less than 30 seconds after Callahan’s game-opening tally to make it 2-0. Michael Bomes fired home a pair of goals just 39 seconds apart midway through the quarter to push the lead to 4-0 with 7:43 left.
Following the pair of tallies by Bomes, Braintree responded with three straight goals, two coming on the man-up, to make it a one-goal game at 4-3 at the end of one.
Aitken responded back for Wellesley early in the second quarter, firing home a goal after driving to the crease and taking a feed from Bomes before depositing a quick-stick into the back of net to make it 5-3, just 49 seconds in. Just over two minutes later, Bomes completed the hat trick and extended the lead to three goals at 6-3 with a cut around the cage and a jump shot on his strong-hand over the left shoulder of the Braintree net-minder. Just 27 seconds later with 9:16 to play, Bomes unleashed a low-to-high cannon that went bar-and-in to make it 7-3 in favor of Wellesley.
Nick Marvan finished a strong drive to the crease with a diving shot through the five-hole of the Braintree goaltender to make it 8-3 Wellesley with 8:12 to play. Bomes kept the Raider run going with his fifth of the day after a dodge from X and finish up high to make it 9-3 before Callahan completed his hat trick with a goal off of a rebound with 2:17 to play, and the Raiders took a 10-3 lead into halftime.
The second half saw the Raiders keep their feet on the gas, as Bomes shot home a pair of goals in the opening two minutes of the third quarter to extend the lead to 12-3. Nick Marvan scored his second of the day to push the lead to 10 at 13-3. The Raiders would go on to win by a 17-4 final.
Wellesley will look to stick to its winning script when the Raiders travel to face Milton on April 24.
