On Sunday, June 4, Westwood High School held graduation exercises, welcoming the class of 2017 into post-high school life. The ceremony was held inside the gym in response to uncertain weather outside. The seniors made their way into their seats while the Wellesley High School Band played “Pomp and Circumstance,” and were then welcomed to the celebration of their accomplishments by their principal, Sean Bevan.
The welcome address was given by the class president, Camille Cummings. Afterwards, Quinn Albert and Anusha Manglik each gave Honor Addresses as the co-valedictorians of the class of 2017. “We are taught to blend in, to sit down, to speak in soft tones, to follow rigid guidelines on our appearance, our future occupations, our definitions of success,” Albert said. “We are measured by narrow uniform standards and told to belief these are the only ones. Now more than ever we cannot accept mediocrity. We are the essence of excellence. We cannot admit failure, but in failing discover who we really are. We cannot be silent, because we are the voice of the future. Our light must shine.”
A few days before the ceremony, Dr. Bevan shared, “I'm really going to miss this class! Every graduating class has its own identity and complexion, and what I will remember about the class of 2017 is that they have a collective big personality. They are gregarious, enthusiastic, and always brought a good energy with them to school each day. They have demonstrated those fun qualities all four years, and I will be sad to see them go!”Dr. Bevan and Nicole Haberman, the assistant principal presented community awards and scholarships to the class. Carol Lewis, Chair of the Westwood School Committee presented their diplomas.
Following the graduation, the 28th Annual All Night Graduation Party began at 9 p.m., an evening filled with music, entertainment, the class video, and a variety of surprises.
The class of 2017 will go on to do great things, and should be proud of all of their accomplishments.
