The cafeteria of the Sheehan School in Westwood was transformed into a science lab for local kids this week. “Top Secret Science,” a non-profit education group based out of Woburn, provided first to fifth graders the chance to enjoy hands-on science projects while beating the heat.
“We are at different places each week throughout the summer,” said Alison White, a senior counselor. “Every day, we come in with a new theme and experiments to match it, topics we’ve done this week include magnets, light, sound and chemistry.”
Besides the camp being a learning experience, the kids also got to bring home souvenirs they made themselves. The counselors design the experiments with the ‘take home’ benefits in mind, such as bouncy balls or homemade snow. Every day featured roughly 10 “take home” projects and around 5 experiments that don’t leave the lab.
Top Secret Science camps usually have between 20-40 kids register; their week in Westwood saw 34 sign up. It was a great way for the kids to have fun in the waning days of summer - getting back inside a classroom setting will ease the pain of back-to-school September.
“One, two, three … eyes on me!” grabbed the attention of all the campers before Alison and her fellow counselors explained the details of finishing up the kids’ new bouncy balls.
