Celeste Mahoney has been named the winner of the Foundation for Westwood Education’s first annual Shining Star Award. Ms. Mahoney, nurse at the Martha Jones School, was chosen as 2017’s Shining Star for her outstanding physical and emotional care of children.
Nominators recounted Ms. Mahoney’s prowess and kindness in everything from treating minor scrapes to ensuring the safety of children with serious conditions such as food allergies and diabetes. “Ms. Mahoney goes above and beyond her job description in caring for our kids,” say parents. “Children feel comfortable going to see her whether they are sick or need to talk, or even if they simply want a hug.” Ms. Mahoney was chosen for the Shining Star Award from among nearly one hundred nominations.
Seth Lucash, social studies teacher at the Thurston Middle School, and Erica Haupt Yennior, music teacher at the Sheehan School, received honorable mentions for their inspirational classes and their help and encouragement of students outside of class.
The Shining Star Award is a Foundation for Westwood Education fundraising initiative designed to further the Foundation’s mission by recognizing one individual each year for his or her exceptional contribution to the educational and cultural environment of Westwood.
Shining Stars featuring the names of all those nominated will remain on display in the lobby of the Westwood Public Library, main branch, through the month of May.
