The Westwood High School boys varsity hockey team concluded their incredible regular season with two wins in their final three games this past week, winning the Fairleigh Dickinson Tournament (Martha’s Vineyard) by defeating Weston 5-0 on Saturday night before a 4-1 victory over Lynnfield in the finals on Sunday.
Sophomore forward Owen Heidelberg (two goals, assist), senior forward Aaron Janfaza (goal, two assists), and senior forward Ben Lewis (goal, three assists) led the Wolverines in points throughout the weekend. Junior goaltender Justin Anderson shut the door in both games, allowing just one goal on a total of 41 shots throughout the two games, guiding Westwood to the tournament title.
Following their two wins on the Island over the weekend, the Wolverines (17-4-1) returned home for Senior Night to face a rugged Old Rochester/Fairhaven (19-3-0) group on Wednesday evening at Canton Ice House to conclude the regular season. Unfortunately, the Wolverines were unable to close out the regular season on a winning note, falling 4-1 to the Bulldogs in an extremely physical contest. However, their 17 wins on the year should be enough to get Westwood a very high seed in the state tournament next week.
The Wolverines will now enjoy a much-needed rest period as they get set to do battle in the Massachusetts State Tournament next week. Joining the Wolverines from the TVL in States will be Dover-Sherborn (11-8-1), Ashland (10-8-2), Hopedale/Millis (10-9-1), conference-leading Hopkinton (17-2-1), and Medway (15-3-3).
