Coming off a 45-27 season-opening victory at Medway on December 10, the Wellesley High School girls varsity basketball team moved to 2-0 on Wednesday night after a 57-39 win in their home-opener against Revere.
Senior captain and shooting guard Brooke Guiffre led the way for Wellesley with a game-high 22 points. Fellow senior captain and point guard Gianna Palli recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 assists.
Back-to-back steals and layups by Guiffre to finish the quarter gave the Lady-Raiders a 14-12 lead at the end of one. The lead fluctuated throughout the second quarter, but a quick 5-0 run to finish the half via a three-pointer by senior captain and shooting guard Molly Cronin (six points) and a layup by Guiffre gave Wellesley a 25-24 lead at halftime.
Revere began the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 31-25 lead, but Wellesley responded right back with an 8-0 run of their own, thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Guiffre and a layup by Palli, to take back the lead at 33-31. Following a timeout by Revere, Wellesley finished the quarter on a 13-4 run, highlighted by a three from Palli and a layup by Guiffre as the Lady-Raiders took a 46-37 lead into the fourth.
Wellesley kept their feet on the gas and went for the jugular in the fourth quarter, outscoring Revere 11-2 en route to the 18-point victory.
The Lady-Raiders will enjoy some downtime before getting back after it against Hanover in their holiday tournament on December 27.
