The Medfield High varsity football team took to the gridiron on Friday evening under the lights on the new turf at Calvin George Fisher Field against Norton high school.

The Warriors (4-1) got their third win in as many games in a hard fought 14-7 victory over the Lancers (3-2). The game was featured as FOX25’s High School GameDay Game of the Week.

A solid defensive effort early by both teams resulted in a scoreless first half. The first points of the ballgame game with 5:47 remaining in the third quarter when Warrior quarterback Ryan Eamer hit wide out Mitchell Gonser on a 46-yard catch and run to the end zone to put Medfield ahead 7-0.

The Lancers responded with a quick score of their own, driving down the field in just over two minutes to knot the game at seven near the end of the third quarter.

It was a short-lived tie for the Lancers, however, as James Voss returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown to give the Warriors back the lead entering the final frame.

The Warrior defense played lockdown in the final quarter and change to preserve the 14-7 lead, with linebacker George McDonald (three tackles for loss) and Mitchell Gonser, leading the charge. Gonser’s late interception sealed the victory for the Warriors.

Following the win, a humbled Mitchell Gonser credited his teammates for the hard fought victory and said that he and the rest of the gang just did what they were supposed to do.

“Someone had to step up tonight and just happened to be me,” said Gonser. “Everyone on the team, they just do their job and, you know, I am just glad to have such great teammates to do their work and I’ll just do mine.”

James Voss said after the game that Medfield’s recent success in football can be credited to a complete team effort.

“I think it’s awesome. It takes everyone in the program from top to bottom,” said Voss. “Its not a couple of players, its not just the starting offense, its everybody from top to bottom.”

The Warriors take the field next Friday night when they travel to face TVL rivals Westwood.
