Medfielders play in FBU National Championship

Two Medfielders recently played in the FBU National Championship.

"The FBU National Championship tournament," according to fbunc.com, "celebrates and promotes youth football through uniting all-star athletes of all backgrounds from across the United States in a true, one-of-a-kind national tournament. The only national football tournament of its kind, the annual FBU National Championship crowns a national champion from brackets in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th."

For the second year in a row, the Massachusetts Elite football teams won their way into the Elite 8 of the FBU National Championship. The concluding rounds of the tournament took place in Naples, FL, beginning on Monday, December 16. All three teams competed in, and won, their Northeast regional bracket games, which were held in Holmdel, NJ on November 30 and December 1. Kentucky was the only other state out of 32 to send all three teams to Naples.

Zach O’Connell (#81) and Andrew Bingham (#16) represented Medfield on the 7th grade team. Andrew was the starting quarterback and Zach played wide receiver.

At the conclusion of the tournament, the Mass Elite team placed second after defeating Southern California, Seattle, and losing to a year-round Georgia team in the finals.
