The Medfield eighth grade boys 'A' travel team put an exclamation point on its season by clinching the Metrowest championship. For the Medfield boys, who dominated their Walpole opponents in the final by a score of 56-33, it was a fitting conclusion to a great season. The team finished the season with a 19-4 overall record, including a 14-3 mark in league play. Their success was sufficient to earn them a top-ten finish in the Metrowest Power Rankings.
For the team, which has been together for four years, the championship is a testament to its hard work, camaraderie and persistence. Having started the season with two difficult losses, the Medfield boys concluded the season on a 17-2 run, including two tournament victories in December and February. Indeed, exciting finishes seemed to be par for the course for the team - among the key moments of the season was a half-court buzzer-beater in the Metrowest quarterfinal game against Milton.
Coach Eric Baacke credited the team's ability and desire to play defense as a key to their success. “All 10 boys on this team played ferocious team defense on every opponent's possession and it helped them become one of the best defensive teams in the state,” he said. “There wasn't a team out there that wasn't trying to figure out a way to beat this defense, and in the end, no one really did.”
For the Medfield boys, it was the perfect ending to four years of hard work and friendship.
