The Medfield High School girls varsity hockey team won their second consecutive SEMGHL championship this past Wednesday at Rodman Arena in Walpole in the form of a 3-0 shutout victory over King Phillip Regional.
Following a scoreless first period, the Warriors (12-6-2, 9-2-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the second period thanks to a snipe by sophomore forward Laney Ockerbloom.
Just three minutes later, freshman forward Maddie Laliberte gave the lady-Warriors some insurance with a one-time shot from the hash marks off of a pass by senior captain Sarah Graham to put Medfield up 2-0 heading into the final period of play. It was a milestone night for Graham on Wednesday, as her assist on the Laliberte goal was point No. 100 in her incredible hockey career at MHS.
Junior forward Rebecca Brown extended the lead to three with a shot off the post and in midway through the third period. Sophomore goaltender Sophia Merageas shut the door in the final minutes of the third period despite two power play opportunities for KP to go along with her 18-save effort. The Warriors preserved the shutout for Merageas by locking down the middle of the ice, and prevailed by a final of 3-0.
Following the win, junior defenseman Kristen Reardon, senior forward Sarah Graham, junior forward Rebecca Brown, sophomore goaltender Sophia Merageas, and junior defenseman Olivia Pietersen were named SEMGHL All-Stars, and the five lady-Warrior standouts represented Medfield in the 2016-2017 SEMGHL All-Star Game on Saturday in Bourne.
