The DSHS Varsity Boys’ Basketball Raiders opened their season on the road against Bellingham High School on Tuesday (December 12th) and came away with a hard-fought win, downing the Blackhawks by the score of 50-40. DS was unable to get their offense on track early and did not lead the contest until midway through the second period. However, once the offense clicked, Mason Melchionda and Jono Wendle were able to knife through traffic and score at the rim which pulled the defense in and allowed DS open looks from beyond the 3-point arc. Chris Kiesling and Steven Saber took advantage and dropped shots while Gavin Lynch and Thomas Cherney cleaned up under the rim, keeping the hosts’ swarming defense off balance and unable to match DS down the stretch.
The Raiders were led in scoring by seniors Melchionda (12), Windle (10), and Charles Fang (8). As a squad, Dover-Sherborn had the advantage in both assists and rebounds, and they shot an impressive 40% from the three-point line in the win.
On Friday (December 15th) they hosted Millis High School for their home opener and cruised to a 64-43 win. Melchionda, Windle and Kiesling led all scorers at the half, which DSHS led comfortably by the score of 34-9. It was more of the same in the second half as DS cruised to its second win to begin the season, the final: DS 64, Millis 43. The senior guard duo of Melchionda (15) and Windle (11) led Dover-Sherborn in scoring on the night. The Raiders continue their season with games on Tuesday and Friday nights through mid-February.
