Needham embraces and celebrates all religions and traditions within its community. In honor of Hanukkah, the Chabad Jewish Center hosted a menorah lighting outside Needham Town Hall, inviting residents to come together in celebration.
Rabbi Mendy Krinsky led the program, introducing speakers, including Needham resident Boaz Arbel. Arbel shared reflections on his recent time in Israel and his work in the military there. He spoke about his family members who are also serving in Israel and expressed hopes for safety and peace. Rabbi Krinsky then led the group in prayer before the menorah lighting.
A member of the Needham Police Department was invited to light the Shamash, the central candle of the menorah, which is used to light the other candles. Since this event took place on the second day of Hanukkah, two candles were lit on the large menorah displayed outside Town Hall.
Following the lighting, a unique smartphone light show captivated the crowd. Participants used their phones to create synchronized flashing lights that lit up the lawn in time with the music. The audience enthusiastically joined in, organizing themselves to ensure the light show worked smoothly and even dancing along to the beat. The light show lasted a few minutes, after which attendees mingled, chatted, and enjoyed treats provided by the Chabad Jewish Center.
While the light show marked the end of the official ceremony, attendees stayed to catch up with friends and family, continuing to dance and laugh together. Conversations ranged widely as people enjoyed the festive atmosphere before heading home to light their own menorahs.
The menorah outside Needham Town Hall will remain lit for the eight days of Hanukkah, honoring the holiday's traditions. The Chabad Jewish Center continues to host events for the Jewish community in Needham and beyond, extending its reach well past Hanukkah celebrations.
