Sensory fun with Sound Sculpture

Recently, Sound Sculptures illuminated Medfield as local families bundled up in their finest winter gear to venture out to the Bellforge Arts Center and experiment with this unique structure.

The Sound Sculpture, crafted by MASARY Studios, is an interactive fusion of sound and light designed as a spontaneous platform for collaborative composition. Featuring 25 location-aware blocks forming a sizable wireless controller, each cube corresponds to a musical note in both space and time. As participants engage with and position the cubes, they collaboratively construct musical arrangements facilitated by prepared sound and light scores. It's akin to stepping onto a blank staff paper, manipulating notes to alter pitch, rhythm, melody, and harmony. Through this process, participants collectively and simultaneously shape both physical and sonic structures.

Folks of all ages, from toddlers toddling around in the chilly February night air to older individuals trying to understand how the movement of these blocks affected their sounds, were in awe of the Sound Sculpture.

Children were quick to make friends with one another as they enlisted each other's help to build these structures. Little ones built towers, forts, stairs, and even a catwalk to see how these different structures changed the sounds and colors of the various blocks.

The darkness of the night was illuminated by the pulsating colors of the rainbow, as each sound invited a different wave of colors. Some structures invited vibrant blue, while others provided flashes from violet to yellow. Adults enjoyed cups of hot cocoa and sweet treats from the food truck that was on site as the children engaged their bodies and minds to investigate and explore all that these colorful boxes could do.

“It is just so nice that the Bellforge is hosting an event during the wintertime,” one local mother remarked. It is safe to say that everyone in attendance felt this way.

“During the winter months, it is difficult to find something to do. This is something fun for the whole family!” Kathy Beauregard, a local grandmother, shared as she watched her two young grandchildren play on the structure.

All of the families enjoyed illuminating the cold, winter month of February with the fun provided by the Sound Sculpture. For more information on upcoming events at the Bellforge Arts Center, please visit their website: bellforge.org/events/
