The auditorium at Medfield High was filled with traditional Chinese culture as the school hosted its Chinese Cultural Show last Wednesday.
Featuring recitations of traditional Chinese poetry, to dance, music and martial arts, students at Medfield High and area middle schools came together to celebrate all that is Chinese.
“The students were so excited,” said Elaine Liu, a Blake Middle world languages teacher who helped organize the show.
Liu noted the performances represent a broad array of Chinese culture that helps students connect with the culture.
“The most important part is that it allows students to get involved as they are exposed to Chinese culture,” Liu said.
The show featured a number of elements from Chinese culture. The Medfield High Jazz Band was on hand to perform traditional Chinese music. Several students presented demonstrations and the history of the Chinese arts of Tai Chi and kung fu.
Other students showed off Chinese brush painting the students had created in class, while a group of students performed a traditional ribbon and cloth ball dance.
The students picked their performances to showcase the variety and diversity found in Chinese culture.
“I think Tai Chi is really cool,” said Sophie Tom, a tenth grader who performed Tai Chi during the culture show. “It's a very different part of martial arts.”
While most of the students performing only had a few class sessions a week to prepare for the show, many were feeling confident in their roles before the show.
