On the heels of a popular farm dinner on Friday, August 26, Powisset Farm followed up with Story Time for preschoolers on the morning of Thursday, September 1. From 10 a.m. to a bit past 11 a.m., a small troop of dedicated preschoolers and parents braved the rain to hear some stories and tour the picturesque Powisset Farm.

Nicole Nacamuli read stories about birds and caterpillars, with which the preschoolers were encouraged to interact, pointing out the birds on the pages. This was the last Story Time of the summer, so the kids were treated to a special look at the pigs and chickens that reside on the farm. Walking a short way back from the tent where the stories were told, the open-air pigpen proved a bit smelly, but also rather exciting; these were not the sort of “garden variety” animals that kids typically find in their back yards. The chicken coop fascinated preschoolers Sadie and Ethan, who got to see some hens laying their eggs.

“We looked at the chickens for a little sneak preview of our Nest to Table program,” said Nacamuli. “Nest to Table is coming up on September 17 and November 11, and the program teaches kids how to handle chickens and then how to cook a simple meal with an egg.”

Other upcoming programs include farm dinners on the last Friday of September and October. More story hours will be on the holidays around Halloween and Thanksgiving. Halloween also features a pumpkin whoopie-pie cooking class. There will also be a trail run in the month of October. For more information on any of these events and to learn what else Powisset Farm has to offer, readers are encouraged to visit the Trustees website (www.thetrustees.org).
