With the onset of spring, the more fanciful members of the community start thinking about such things as the prospect of fairies. On April 4, the Sherborn Public Library showed its own whimsical nature by inviting kids and parents alike to join them in the making of fairy gardens.
The workshop included basic materials, as well as a gnome. Attendees were invited to bring their own materials from home to augment their gardens. “Fairies will love to play in your garden,” the library promised.
After witnessing the end product, there is no doubt that there will soon be an influx of fairies in the Sherborn area.
The gardens began with clay bottoms. Cheryl Stern Ouellette, the Children’s Librarian, acquired many of the materials at a craft store. “The bases, we got those at the craft store. I made the little gnomes out of clay, and then we had many supplies. Rocks, beach pebbles, beach glass … We had shells, too,” she explained.
The gnomes were absolutely adorable - in their pointy red hats, they were vaguely reminiscent of the Travelocity mascot.
“Some things we found outside. We have pine cones from the gardens and we had some acorn tops, we had them in everybody’s bag,” she added. All of these decorations went on top of a base of mulch.
The workshop was well attended, with a dozen or so children working on their gardens and then playing together afterwards. Each parent was supplied with a large Ziploc bag to transport the gardens back to their homes, where they can be placed outside in anticipation of a fairy visitor.
Hopefully, once the rain ends, the friendly gnomes and sparkly decorations will lure in even the most elusive of fairies.
