The ideas surrounding Thanksgiving are often focused on the conceptual – giving thanks for what we have, being thankful for those around us, appreciating our families and friends. This appreciation can also be extended to what is around us, not just who. At Powisset Farm, a Thanksgiving Story Hour helped to appreciate not only those who are near us at the holiday, but also the natural splendor and beauty that surrounds us.
Two families gathered inside the gorgeous rustic farm, listening to the book “Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf.” The story isn’t directly related to the holiday of Thanksgiving, but shows appreciation for the beauty of autumn and the importance of agriculture. Specifically, the story explores on a basic level how trees can be planted, moved, purchased, and re-planted – something with which the farm itself is very familiar.
In addition to the story, children and their guardians were invited to make homemade bird feeders. Each child chose a cookie cutter that they liked most – the heart was very popular, as were the dog and the cat. They each cut this shape from a piece of bread, and then covered the bread with egg white. This was then covered in bird seed on both sides and let it dry before tying a ribbon to it to be able to hang it from a tree or a window on their house. The kids were given a choice of a red or a gold sparkly ribbon, the latter of which was particularly attention-grabbing.
Over the summer, Story Hour is offered once a week. However as the holidays near, the event is only offered near specific holidays. A few weeks back, the farm offered a Halloween Story Hour, and the next one will be Christmas related.
