Friends of Farm Pond hosted their 39th Annual Sand Sculpture Contest this past Sunday, July 23rd. Due to last week’s unfortunate weather, they had to push back this event by a week. Despite the cancellation, the rain date proved to have the perfect summer weather.

Farm Pond in Sherborn was packed with families enjoying the beautiful summer day as well as a bit of friendly competition. For this year’s contest, twelve contestants went head to head to create their best sand sculptures. Areas within the sand were sectioned off for each team and they had about an hour and a half to work on their sand art.

Judging took place by Friends of Farm Pond members and were broken up into different categories. Ranked from first to third place, this year’s winners were Crab Dominion, Hungry Hippos, and Fred. First place prizes included a golden shovel and a gift card. No matter what place you came in, everyone was a winner and was awarded a prize.

This year’s sand sculptures were absolutely incredible and super unique. The lifeguard team created a giant fish which many were in awe over. Other sculptures included a nike shoe, an octopus, a mini boat, a mermaid, and even a tiny kitchen with intricate details like eggs frying in a pan.

The creativity was off the charts and the judges could not have been more impressed. When coming together to make their final decisions, each judge mentioned how difficult it would be to name a first place winner. One judge mentioned, “I absolutely love the mermaid sculpture. If I ever wanted to turn into a sand sculpture, it would definitely be that one.”

Maureen, one of the members from Friends of Farm Pond, went on to state, “We had to cancel last week because the weather was so bad but we really lucked out today. It’s like the nicest day of the summer. We love bringing this event back every year, people really seem to enjoy it.”

Events like these are a great way for family and friends to spend some quality time together while simultaneously indulging in some friendly competition. That is exactly what Friends of Farm pond wants to do all summer long. Their next event, the Perimeter swim, will be happening in early September. These events additionally help to raise funds and raise awareness for the pond itself.
