Experimenting with seed bombs at DTL

It was all things seeds at the Dover Town Library (DTL) as they hosted a “Wildflower Seed Bombs” workshop. This event, which was for children ages five and up, taught little ones how to make seed “bombs” using wildflower seeds, soil and clay.

DTL Librarian Jill was seen headlining this event, helping out the little ones and giving directions on how to make the perfect “bomb.” To start off, Jill handed each participant a plate with a little ball of clay on it, a tablespoon of soil, and a pinch of wildflower seeds. It was then time for everyone to get their hands dirty and combine these elements together to form a slightly bigger ball.

While the “bombs” were being formed, Jill explained that they would eventually harden up. When it comes to planting them, the young gardeners had different options they could choose from: plant them under some soil or simply throw the ball out into a field/garden and watch it grow.

Once this second step was completed, Jill handed everyone a brown paper bag that they were able to decorate however they liked using markers. This bag would go on to carry their seed “bombs" to their cars. Every bag that was decorated was completely unique and little ones had a blast coloring while talking with their friends.

Attendees filed in and out of this event for an hour, eager to make their creations and then go home to plant them. One little girl went up to thank Jill before she left and asked her the best way to plant this seed “bomb.” Jill explained, “Dig a little hole, plant it in the ground, cover it up, and then check on it every couple of days! If something starts growing, you’ll have to come back to the library and tell me what you see. There are so many possibilities of what could grow. It could be an elephant, you never know! Can you imagine? Let me check the bag of seeds to see if there are any elephant seeds inside. … Oh! It says it may or may not contain elephant seeds inside!”

Jill and the DTL put on an amazing event that the children and their guardians thoroughly enjoyed. Time will tell what kind of flowers these seed “bombs” produce!
