Dover-Sherborn High School (DSHS) was honored to graduate the class of 2024 on Friday, June 9, 2024. Originally planned for June 8, the graduation was postponed by a day due to impending rain. This change allowed the class of 2024 to celebrate under the sun and say a final goodbye to their beloved high school.
Graduation started with speeches from the principal and members of both towns' boards of selectmen before members of Noteworthy and DS AL Coda performed “Upside Down” by Jack Johnson. Class President Antonio Saenz then presented his speech to the class. He spoke highly of the everyday heroes that helped to bring the class of 2024 to graduation including parents, teachers, coaches and friends. “The world needs more people willing to be heroes in the everyday sense,” said Saens during his speech.
Members of the DS Regional Chorus then presented “Never Grow Up” by Taylor Swift, before Margaret Bowles was introduced as the Declamation Finalist. Bowles spoke on how important leaders are to the world, and how everyone can find leadership within themselves. She discussed the downfalls in most leaders currently, but how she believes there is hope in future leaders. “Next time you think ‘Why are they in charge?’ or ‘Why are they doing such a bad job at it?’ I urge you to ask yourself ‘Why not me?’”
One final song was performed by Harmonic Imbalance, the school's barbershop quartet, who performed “Come What May”, popularized by the musical “Moulin Rouge”. Before the presentation of diplomas, two students were honored with the Lonergan Award. This award honors former headmaster Denise Lonergan and is given to two students who are active in their communities and are in good academic standing. This year's recipients were James Davis and Adelaide Abstoss. Following this award, the class of 2024 was presented with their diplomas.
Once every student had been honored and walked the stage, the class was led out into the field to toss their caps in celebration. From there graduates were able to find their families and friends to take pictures and celebrate. The graduates from Dover-Sherborn High School are headed to countless colleges and are sure to do great things.
