When the weather starts to cool and winter is around the corner, a noticeably missing concern is where will the fairies go? Last Thursday, the Dover Library tackled this oft-overlooked quandary and provided all of the materials one might need to make a fairy garden or gnome home. Jim Westen, Head of Adult Services at the library, said that there was a line out the door the minute the event opened.
“I came down and people were lined up outside, so I rushed down and was like ‘oh man let’s get this going,’” he said. Even though Jim is the Head of Adult Services, all of the librarians dabble in all of the areas. One of his colleagues thought of this particular craft idea. “I’m not sure where she got it from, but we’re always sharing different ideas with each other that we get from outside sources.” The library provided dirt, moss, and sparkles, which were put in varying combinations into plastic bowls to create the fairy gardens or gnome homes. “People have them in their gardens, but we thought it would be nice to be able to do it on a smaller scale,” Westen said.
The Library tries to offer one to two events of this nature per month, something beyond the standard programs that are usually offered for kids. These events have been becoming more and more popular, evidenced by the line of people waiting for this particular event. “We’re a small library but we like to think outside of the box a little bit. We also like to do cultural stuff. We had the Diwali celebration earlier this year, and in the beginning of January, we’ll probably do something related to the Chinese New Year,” Westen added.
