A large tree came crashing down onto a home in Needham last Thursday.

The tree fell onto a single-family home at 62 Noyes Street during a period of heavy rain and strong wind in the afternoon.

The home, which dates back to 1877, is currently up for sale, and the incident came as a surprise to realtor Leigh Doukas, who received a photo of the damage and quickly rushed to the scene to assist the fire department in finding the owner of the home.

“I was very surprised,” Doukas said. “I was like ‘what?’”

The Needham Fire Department and the Needham Police Department responded to a call about the incident, according to Needham Deputy Fire Chief Peter Cosgrove.

Once the fire department arrived on scene, power was cut to the home and it was quickly determined that no one was living in the home at the time.

“It just took a while to locate an owner,” Cosgrove said, noting that the tree could not be removed without permission from the homeowner.

An owner was located and gave the approval to remove the tree after about an hour, but the job was not completed that day.

“The biggest part of the tree was embedded in the roof. It wasn’t coming down that night,” Cosgrove said. He said crews arrived the next morning to remove the remaining parts of the tree and tarp over the damage.

There were no injuries reported.
