On Friday evening, the Warriors (4–0) took on the Medway Mustangs (3–1) at home. The stands were crowded with players’ families and Medfield high schoolers—who dressed in white for the spirit theme—to kick off the long weekend by going to the varsity football game,

The first quarter was mostly uneventful, Medway having one pass to the endzone that went long. But about five minutes into the second quarter, Medfield scored their first touchdown. Fourth down inside the 15-yard line, the Warriors’ quarterback handed the ball to senior running back Brady McCormack off the snap, and he was able to run it into the endzone, followed by a successful extra point attempt by fellow senior Matteo Benson. In the last minutes of the half, Medway was able to respond with a touchdown by Jack Heavner and subsequent extra point by Aidan Tkowski, so both teams left the half with 7 points.

During halftime, Medfield Cheer—who were paired up with cheerleaders grades first through fourth during the first half—performed a brief routine to a Rihanna medley, followed by Medway’s cheer team. After the cheerleaders, fourth and fifth grade flag football players took the field as the Bengals, the Packers, the Browns, and the Raiders for two games before welcoming the Warriors back onto the field for the second half.

Medway kicked off the third quarter with a punt to Medfield, but only about a minute and a half in, the Warriors scored again with a second touchdown by McCormack. Later, they racked up another touchdown, but the point-after attempt was blocked, keeping the score at 20–7. Almost right after, Medfield suffered another misfortune when one of their players went down and stayed on the ground for several minutes, bringing a serious air despite the Warriors’ lead. It was difficult to see his jersey because of the coaches checking on him, but he was helped off the field by two teammates and did not return for the remainder of the game.

Minutes after the game resumed, Medfield scored again and opted for a two-point conversion. Down 28–7 in the final minutes of the third quarter, the Mustangs were excited when wide receiver Jacob White managed to catch a long pass near the sideline despite the ball being tipped by a defending Warrior. From the 32-yard line now, the Mustangs made a touchdown attempt that was thwarted by an interception by Medfield cornerback Michael Twomey.

In the fourth quarter, running back Matteo Benson had a great run, the play beginning around the 44-yard line in the Warriors’ own end and ending when Benson was tackled inside the 45 of the Mustang’s end. A few attempts later and the Warriors were on the 2-yard line with just under three minutes left in the game. The ball was handed again to McCormack who was able to push through the pack and earn the final touchdown of the game. The Warriors then attempted a two-point conversion, but it was intercepted, holding the score at 34–7.

The Warriors next home game will be their senior night on the 24th at 6:30, facing Bellingham. The team’s full schedule can be found at: www.arbiterlive.com.
