Mor Linn Farm caught fire overnight on July 8, destroying the 150 year old barn and killed eight horses in the process.
The fire, which started just after 11pm, occurred in the two-story barn at the farm. The owners were able to rescue ten of the eighteen horses; they were on able to save the horses that were on the first floor as the second floor was obstructed by the heavy smoke and fire.
John Cox, who works at Eversource, was the one who witnessed the “orange glow of the fire,” and proceeded to call 911 that night just after 11pm. According to WCBV, after calling the police Cox raced over to the house next door to the burning barn and banged the door as hard as he could until the owner finally answered. Once Cox finally caught the attention of the owner, the two rushed over to the barn in an attempt to save as many horses as possible.
Walpole Fire Department, with the assistance of mutual aid, was able to bring the fire under control and prevent the fire from spreading to a neighboring barn and the main house.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
