In their already tremendous season, the Westwood Girls Lacrosse Team finished off the Holliston Panthers with an astounding result, 16-4, on Thursday April 10th. On the Wednesday before, the girls faced off against the 6th ranked, Higham, scoring 15 goals to Highams 12, they expand their undefeated streak, and hope to keep it in several tough matchups, just in the month of April.
The first quarter started out strong as Cece Thurmond was able to net the first goal. Her goal set the spark for Westwood, and made the score 1-0 with still 11 minutes left in the first quarter. Following that goal, Sophomores Cassidy McMillin and Ava Meredith along with Star Senior Captain Caroline Nozzolillo. Rounding out the scoring, in the last minute, Emilie Demaio scored twice, ending the quarter with Westwood in the lead 6-0.
The second quarter was a little slower than the first, but strong defense as a whole team kept all Holliston shots out of the net. Before the half, Thurmond and McMillin scored their second of the day and Sophomore Mila Mandeville scored her first. Continuing throughout the season, Goalies Kathryn Donnellan and Moira Kenneally have been stelar, only allowing a combined 27 goals, and in 5 of their 6 games, less than 6 per.
The third quarter, Westwood seemed to up the tempo, and Holliston failed to match. With 8 minutes left, the score was 10-0, but a few goals by Holliston, even though Westwood had the game in the bag. Towards the end, Caroline Nozzolillo scored with a minute left making the final for the quarter, 11-3.
All thoughts of mercy disappeared in the final quarter as goals by Nozzolillo, E. Demaio, Meredith, and Fitzpatrick coming from intricate passes and delicate dodges, as well as cuts across the goal and strong defense Westwood was able to take the lead 16-4, aside from one extra goal by Holliston, Westwood girls lacrosse were at their peak in this matchup, and if they continue to perform as this level, they'll have a good chance at the state championship.
