The Town of Sherborn is pleased to announce the launch of Sherborn Power Choice, a group electricity buying program from the Town that gives residents and businesses more choice and control over the electricity they buy. Sherborn joins nearly 170 other Massachusetts communities that have this type of electricity program, including Natick, Ashland, and Holliston.
Program participants will get more of their electricity from renewable sources for a price that is lower than Eversource’s current residential Basic Service price, though future savings compared with Eversource cannot be guaranteed. Sherborn received state regulatory approval for the program in December 2023. The program will launch in June.
Sherborn Power Choice participants will see a change in the price that Eversource uses to calculate the Supply Services portion of the electric bill. Eversource remains Sherborn’s electric utility, and will continue to deliver electricity in Sherborn, address power outages, and send electric bills.
The program has three options. Participants in Sherborn Power Choice will be automatically enrolled in Sherborn Standard and will receive an additional 50% of their electricity from renewable sources for 14.046 ¢/kWh, a savings of more than 3 ¢/kWh compared to Eversource’s current residential price of 17.216 ¢/kWh, which is in effect through July 31. Participants can alternatively select one of two other options in the program: Sherborn Select provides electricity that is 100% from renewable sources for 15.086 ¢/kWh or Sherborn Basic provides the minimum renewable electricity required by state law for 12.046 ¢/kWh.
The Town has signed a supply contract with Gridwealth Electric that will keep Sherborn Power Choice prices fixed and stable for 24 months. In comparison, Eversource’s Basic Service prices change every 6 months or less, and their future prices are not known.
In accordance with state law, electricity customers in Sherborn with Eversource’s Basic Service will be automatically enrolled when the program launches in June and will first see a Sherborn Power Choice price on their bill in July. The Town will mail automatic enrollment notifications with program details in early April.
Participation in Sherborn Power Choice is not required. Sherbon electricity customers can opt out of the program before being automatically enrolled or try the program and opt out at any time with no penalty or fee.
Electricity customers who have signed private electricity supply contracts will not be enrolled automatically, but can request enrollment online at SherbornPowerChoice.com or over the phone by calling the Town’s program consultants at 1-855-201-6233. Those with private contracts are encouraged to first check the terms of their electricity supply agreement before making a change to avoid penalties like early termination fees.
Anyone eligible for a low-income discount from Eversource will continue to receive that discount. In addition, anyone receiving solar credits or incentive payments will continue to receive them with no change to how the credits or incentive payments are calculated.
The public is invited to attend public information sessions about the program:
- Wednesday April 17th, 10:00 to 11:00 AM, in person at the Sherborn Town Hall (Select Board room) or remotely via Zoom.
- Thursday April 25th, 7:00 to 8:00 PM, in person at the Sherborn Town Hall (Select Board room) or remotely via Zoom.
