The Medfield gymnasium radiated with a sea of pink-clad spectators, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere as the Medfield girls' volleyball team commenced their night's competition against Dedham. Both teams, resplendent in bright pink, transformed the gym into a scene reminiscent of Barbie, showcasing the incredible unity of the community in rallying behind Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The girls had been enjoying an exceptional season, and their Dig Pink match was no exception as the Warriors triumphed over the Dedham Marauders with a decisive 3-0 victory.
In addition to their on-court success, the Warriors were dedicated to making a difference in their community by raising funds for the local charity, the Ellie Fund. Their commitment to assisting those facing unique challenges was evident in their meticulous planning, from concessions to selling bracelets and even organizing a 50/50 raffle. This was not the first time the team and the community had come together to support the Ellie Fund, as they had forged a meaningful connection with the charity over time.
“We always do a dig pink fundraiser for breast cancer. We worked with the Ellie Fund last year and we had a good connection with them, and we love supporting any breast cancer awareness cause,” said senior captain Tamlyn Shu.
The crowd was electrified with excitement as the Warriors won set after set. The girls won the first set 25-11, but Dedham didn’t go down without a fight as they caught up to the competition well within the second set. Going back and forth the girls’ hits flew in the air, racking up points for each team. Suddenly, the Medfield girls tallied point after point reaching 25 before Dedham could capitalize, winning the second set 25-21. By the third set, the Warriors polished off the night with a 25-27 win, a perfect celebration for their Dig Pink night as the audience cheered away for all of their hard work.
”We had a monetary goal of three thousand this year, but we appreciate anything others are willing to give. Everyone coming to the game cheering and donating has really helped us trying to support the fund in any way we could,” said senior captain Anna Koch.
The Warriors are set to play against Holliston High at home on Friday, October 13th at 6:30 p.m.
