HT10: Meet our sports reporter

By Julia Beauregard

Hometown Weekly Editor

Hometown Weekly Editor, Julia Beauregard, had the pleasure of sitting down with Avonlea Cummings, Hometown Weekly’s sports reporter. Avonlea has worked with our paper since the beginning of the year, providing sports coverage for each of our towns. She is a valuable asset to our team. It was a pleasure to pick her brain and get to know her better.  Be sure to keep an eye out for new installations of the Hometown Ten, and to look out for Hometown Weekly’s reporters on the road — you might be our next subject!

What is the best book you’ve ever read and why?

This is a hard one to answer, and I have to give two books because I cannot decide, but both are for the same reason. The first book I have to say is “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I first read this my sophomore year in high school, and I absolutely fell in love with this novel. It has been my go-to favorite book ever since it’s one of my favorites because I love the imagery and the plot twists that evolve within! Another one of my favorites that I recently read is “The Enigma of Room 622.” I LOVE THIS BOOK. It was the first novel I read by Joel Dicker and I do not have a single bad thing about this story. It is the kind of mystery novel that you cannot put down, I was trying to read it every free second, I had. I believe that if a novel can transport you to a whole new world that you can’t get enough of then it signifies as a true masterpiece. I kept trying to solve the mystery and it turned out to be something I never would have guessed… I highly recommend it!

What is your claim to fame?

I’m recently a college grad and have had the best opportunity to start my career at Hometown Weekly! So grateful to start my experience here!

Besides your home (if you live here), what's your favorite spot in Medfield?

I would say either Blue Moon or Rocky Woods!

Give me a good recommendation.

This is a hard one, I would say if you ever find yourself on the North Shore in Beverly, and you love Italian food, go to Toscana Bar Italiano. It is a small Italian restaurant where they make their own fresh pasta, and their tiramisu is to die for. It is so delicious.

What advice would you give to your past self?

There is a light at the end of every tunnel, and light overcomes darkness. Be close to who you are and don’t let others tear you down for what your interests and hobbies are. Don’t live life in comparison because no matter what you will always think the grass is greener on the other side when in reality, if you look down you may have a beautiful garden in front of you. In times of anxiety, or challenging moments, it’s okay to feel, but never let it define who you are and what you can do.

If you had to spend a million dollars in a day, how would you do it?

I would travel to a unique location, maybe somewhere tropical where I can scuba and learn how to free dive! I would use the rest of the money to help those in need, and make sure hospitals are fully equipped to take care of others, etc.

Who is the most influential person in your life and why?

I think my mother and grandmother are hand in hand being the most influential people in my life. Both are strong and driven women with a great work ethic that I look up to.  They have been my number-one supporters since day one and I couldn’t be more grateful for them. They have persevered through so much in life, their influences on me have been so impactful I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them guiding me. I strive to be just like them one day.

How do you spend your free time?

I love running, reading, writing, and listening to music. I will most likely be playing Taylor Swift…

Describe your perfect day (where you’d go, who you’d be with, what you’d do).

The perfect day would be seeing my family for brunch at Parker’s Maple Barn in Brookline, NH. (so good) Then I would go travel with my boyfriend and our friends and just have an absolute blast being adventurous and trying new things. I think we would go somewhere that isn’t the typical travel destination and find unique spots to explore.

What is your ideal career?

I would like to become a sports broadcaster one day covering for the Bruins! Hockey is by far my favorite sport, and being a Boston fan is something special. I love the atmosphere and energy surrounding the Bruins as being a part of the original six, there is a lot of history throughout the team. I love sports reporting because you get to see people push themselves to the best of their ability and celebrate alongside athletes during their highest achievements or be able to show empathy and support in their lowest of lows. I think that within sports there are a multitude of different stories in each game not just solely the competition and that’s what I find the most intriguing about sports broadcasting.
