Sunday morning was made even sweeter when Cub Scout Pack 113 of Medfield held their pancake breakfast at the high school on November 20. Early-birds showed up at 7 a.m., but there were plenty of pancakes for all.

The sweet smell of syrup wafted through the stairwell up to the bustling cafeteria. Scouts invited their families, friends, and community members to stop by to share the most important meal of the day for a great cause. The twelve dollar ticket price included a plate of fluffy pancakes and sausages to directly fund the Pack’s supplies, scholarships, youth education, and community service opportunities.

Cubmaster Greg Brown elaborated on the necessity of community involvement and spoke highly of the attendees who made a massive difference in the future of Pack 113. The breakfast funds integral supplies, activities, and attire for the scouts, such as Pinewood Derby cars for their racing day, neckerchiefs and slides, and renting the Rocky Woods cabin for Pack meetings. “This is the first time we’ve done a pancake breakfast," Brown commented. "Historically, we’ve sold popcorn … We want to make more of a community event. We have the Fire Department here and we’re collecting food for the Medfield Food Cupboard.” The support of the town came from all directions, and was the primary factor in the fundraiser’s success.

The event was truly a team effort. Food Services Director Caitlin Fahy lent expertise in ordering food for the crowd of over 300. Memorial School Kitchen Manager Terri Lynch arrived as early as 6 a.m. to set up. Matt Howell and Mike Patore of Pack 113 planned, organized, and executed the event. Neighbor Troops 10 and 89 of Medfield assisted with donation collections for the food drive and lent cooking equipment. The Medfield Fire Department even had a fire engine outside in which the kids could explore and take photos.

“We’re setting the foundation. It’s a great turnout,” Cubmaster Brown mused. Children had plenty of energy -- boys easily made friends with those in other troops and were happy to share ideas for future plans in between bites of breakfast.

When it came to discussing favorite events, the pack was unanimous. “Yesterday we did Rocket Day at McCarthy Field," Brown continued. "Kids loved playing with model rockets; that was a blast. Last weekend, we did a trip to Battleship Cove. Kids spent a night on an old battleship, the USS Massachusetts.” Scouts enthusiastically shared details of sleeping on the bunks as the waves rocked by.

There are plenty of enriching and exciting opportunities in the Pack’s future. “We’re planning events for the winter and spring.” Pack 113’s vision, according to Cubmaster Brown, is to create safe, fun, and inclusive events. “We help families make memories together. It really is a family activity.”
