Over the last year, two Girl Scouts from the Walpole Troop 74678 have built and installed a butterfly garden for their Silver Award project. Located at the Neponset View Terrace Senior Living Facility in Walpole, the garden attracts various pollinators to the area and creates a long-lasting, positive impact to the community. Purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan, blue bellflower, and butterfly bush are just a few of the most popular flowers in the garden.
The Silver Award is the second highest award a Girl Scout can achieve. It requires a minimum of 50 hours and a project that helps to improve the community. The girls both designed and constructed this garden to help beautify the living facility, and to make a more enjoyable living experience for the residents. The scouts worked well over 50 hours to complete their project, collaborating with the head of the facility to figure out the most effective plan and to find the best possible location in which to place the garden. In addition, the girls excavated the existing turf and replaced it with fresh topsoil. To finish off the project, the scouts transferred the new flowers into the butterfly garden.
The girls indicated that they could not have completed this project without donations from local businesses, and invited the Walpole community to stop by to enjoy the garden and its beautiful flowers.
