Needham residents Cathy Byrd and Aaron “Ron” Sockol have been awarded 2016’s Melick Award on Monday, May 9. The Melick Award celebrates individuals whose generous spirit of volunteerism has contributed to the quality of life in the Needham community.

In addition to Byrd and Sockol, the Foundation honored Town Meeting members who had served over 25 years in town government. This year’s recognized public servants were Barry McDonough, Cindy Chaston, John Genova and Bill Dugan (posthumously).

The Richard Patton Melick Foundation was created in 1997 in the name of Dick Melick, a Needham community leader who served for over 35 years as Town Moderator. The Foundation has also established an annual $2,500 scholarship for a Needham High School senior who is active in the community and has carried on Mr. Melick’s spirit of neighborly service to the town of Needham.

The Melick Foundation also supports the Needham High School Speech and Debate Club and the high school’s participation in National History Day.
