Despite graduating their top scorer from a season ago in Kat Keith, the Westwood High School girls varsity hockey team didn’t skip a beat on Saturday night in their season-opening contest against rival Dover-Sherborn.
Behind a solid and complete performance on offense, as well as a shutdown defensive effort, the Wolverines rolled to an 8-0 win to start off their 2019-2020 campaign.
Senior captain Emma Curley finished a breakaway less than two minutes in to put the Wolverines on top, 1-0. Ainsley Campbell fired home a wrist shot moments later to double the lead to two. Freshman Sophia Levering buried a wrap-around bid from behind the net to make it a 3-0 game, followed by a shot from the point that made its way through a screen by Abigail Crowley to make it 4-0. Senior captain Emma Conway potted home a rebound with 39 seconds to play as Westwood took a commanding 5-0 lead into the first intermission. At 9:21 of the second, Campbell shot home her second of the night off a feed from Conway on a two-on-one. With 3:43 to play in the period, Hannah Blomquist deposited home a goal on the power play with a wrist shot upstairs to put Westwood up by a touchdown at the end of two periods.
The Wolverines would add another in the third and prevail by the eight-goal final. Westwood will look to continue its winning ways when the Wolverines host Milton following the holiday break on December 27.
